The gas surplus, which could last for 10 years, could potentially lead to greater investment in gas-fired power stations at the form of alternative forms of electricity generation. It is the result of recent technical advances that have made it possible to exploit shale gas, coal bed methane and tight gas deposits. Most of these sources are in China, the US and Australia.
