According to a report from WWF Living Planet, the Earth’s population is using 1.5 planets’ worth of natural resources, with modern Western lifestyles leading to record levels of ‘plundering’ the natural resources of the tropics. Human consumption has doubled in the last 40 years while the Living Planet Index has declined by 30% overall and 60% in the tropics.

On a more positive side, the long term decline of animal life appears to have stabilised with growth in animal populations in richer nations north and south of the tropics.
