Researchers at the University of Connecticut have demonstrated that hemp is an effective source of biodiesel. Their research shows that 97% of virgin hemp oil can be converted to biodiesel – and the biodiesel can be used at lower temperatures than any other biodiesel currently produced.

 

A further benefit is that hemp does not require high quality land to grow, so it is less likely to compete with food crops.

 

Ironically, despite the research being carried out in the USA, the country’s prohibition on growing hemp because of its links to marijuana.
