According to a recent survey, 93% of CEOs see sustainability issues as important to the success of their companies and 81% say that sustainability issues are fully embedded into their strategy and operations.
The survey, carried out by Accenture and the United Nations Global Compact, also gives a number of examples of companies that have adopted and benefited from this approach. However, there are others who dispute these results.
Another survey, of some 1,500 corporate executives and managers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Boston Consulting Group challenges this view, suggesting that the CEO rhetoric in the Accenture study is not being matched by practice.
Writing in The Guardian, sustainability specialist Rory Sullivan suggests the combination of these different surveys indicates that sustainability is certainly on the corporate agenda and some progress has been made but there is still a long way to go.
