Figures released by the Environment Agency indicate that fewer than 10% of the organisations captured by the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme have registered. There are now fears that many of these will miss the September deadline and be subject to fines.
The shortfall covers both those organisations that are required to participate fully and those that required to declare information but do not need to purchase carbon allowances. The former face fines of £5,000 plus £500 per day if they miss the deadline, while the latter can be fined £500 for each half-hourly meter they fail to declare.
Fears that many will miss the September deadline are compounded by the fact that fewer resources will be available for gathering and analysing the data during the summer holiday period.
